Abstract: The internal market was always playing a vital role to the European integration. Harmonisation and the free movement of goods were the main two tools pushing the internal market into completion. The single market plan did not magically come to an end in 1992. Various measures that complete and expand the internal market continue to flow. Today, the EU aims the creation of a single European maritime transport area by the simplification and elimination of trade barriers within the intra-EU maritime transport. Union goods that travel between EU ports and pass the custom territory of the EU are doom to face all the relevant administrative procedures like non-Union goods. Thus, the expansion of - or the establishment of a real - internal market would strengthen the competitive situation of shipping versus other modes of transport and the whole economy. A single European maritime transport area will deepen the internal market which is a powerful instrument to promote economic integration.
