Development of Travel Mode Choice Models for Commuting Trips in Dhaka City

Abstract: This paper describes the multinomial and nested logit models developed for travel mode choice of home-based work trips in Dhaka City. Although a very few travel demand forecasting models have been developed for Dhaka City but none of them has a comprehensive mode choice model that can incorporate the complex travel behaviour pattern of the city. In this study a comprehensive mode choice modeling framework was developed and calibrated to present the diversified modal choice behavior in Dhaka City considering the dominant non-motorized mode rickshaw and all possible minor modes available in the city. Important deterministic variables included in the utility equations include only the total travel time and total travel cost for simplicity of the models. The developed models were then used to determine the utility ranking of transport modes in Dhaka City and to test the effect of proposed urban transport-related developments in Dhaka City on mode choice probabilities of urban travelers.
