Abstract: The airline industry is characterized not only by the large number of carriers, but also an abundance of perplexing terms in their classification. "National carriers ", "Network carriers ", "Regional carriers ", and "Low cost carriers " are some to name a few. Adding to the complexity is the fact that these classifications are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Southwest Airlines, for example, is classified as a "Low cost carriers " by the Department of Transportation (DOT) while at the same time being qualified as a "National carrier " in DOT s own definition. Drawing upon authoritative sources from the Bureau of Transportation Statics, DOT, and recent academic research, this note provides a comprehensive evaluation of existing classifications and clarifies common misconceptions.
