Abstract: Back in the 90s, Côte Dd´ Ivoire was one of the first nations in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) nations to turn to the independent power producers (IPPs) to meet its rapidly growing demand and to grant a private utility a concession to a private utility operate the distribution and transmission network, back in the 90s. Thanks to this strategy, its power system is one of the most reliable and extensiveded in SSA. Aware of the crucial role of electrification to plays in sustaining the economic growth and accelerateing the social development, the country has made substantial and rapid progress since the end of the post-electoral conflict in 2011. However, the sector still faces many challenges. The electricity consumption per capita is ten (10) times lower than the world average, and 67 of the households, primarily in rural areas, do not have an electricity connection (affecting especially the rural areas). The tariffs prices and access fees are too high for a significant part of the population but too low to cover the costs of the system, costs - which generatedcreates a financial deficit situation. On the With regard to electricity generation side, the sector is still has a veryhigh concentrationed in terms of players and technologies ., sShortages in the supply of domestic natural gas - the main fuel to generate electricity - arerepresent a threat, and the potential of renewables energyies potential (other than hydro) remains locked. Furthermore, the demand is growing fast, putting pressure on the country´ s investment capacity, and the outdated network is carrying suffering high commercial and technical losses.What are the underlying reasons for these problems? In which direction is the sector is moving to resolve them? What else could be done to accelerate the progress in a sustainablye way? What are the opportunities are there for private investors that could help to boost the development ofin the sector and improve increase the population s access to electricity for the population?Looking for responses to these questions tThis paper seeks responses to these questions goes through by examining the power sector s supply chain of the power sector - production, transportation, distribution and consumption -, with the final goalaim toof provideing the private investors with an overall understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the Ivorian electricity sector, its challenges and opportunities, and promoteing alternatives that could help to reduce the situation of energy poverty that acurrently faced by a considerable part substantial percentage of the Ivorian population still faces.
