Abstract: Nitrogen oxide and particulate matter legislations are major concern of compression ignition engine combustion. Additionally, growing energy demand with developing transportation sector requires sustainable alternate of conventional crude oils. These challenges are effectively solved with the adaptation of methane as gaseous fuel in compression ignition engine. Thus, in the present study, methane is used in single cylinder; four-stroke diesel engine in dual-fuelled mode with varying methane levels at constant engine speed and effects are examined on engine characteristics. It is found that methane fumigation is advantageous for reduction of NOx, soot emissions and replacement of diesel fuel in compression ignition engine.
