Abstract: Electric vehicles are rapidly emerging as perfect substitute for the internal combustion engine vehicles so as to decrease the high dependency of transportation sector on natural resources like oil and gas. BEVs & PHEVs could provide an optimal solution for preventing environmental degradation, decreased emission rates and reduced driving costs. The increasing trend of electric vehicle adoption is satisfied with new techno-economical advancements in development of electric vehicle power drive, battery and charger technologies. With increasing trends of smart grid scenario, EVs could work to balance the power grid parameters with introduction of Vehicle-to-Grid technology which also facilitates grid integration of renewable energy sources. This study provides a review of three major EV research areas- EV charging topologies, various impacts of EVs and smart grid operation with Vehicle-to-Grid(V2G) technique. This study also focuses on the current issues, challenges faced in large scale deployment of EVs and the future direction of research in this field.
