Abstract: It is a fundamental error to underestimate China’s One Belt One Road. It can go off the rails, China could run out of money, or it could fall victim to crony capitalism, but BRI keeps expanding, has a unique form of soft power in its bilateral deal making, has natural constituency of high-risk countries of the poor and forgotten, and for political scientists and political economists it has no single template like the World Bank or the WTO. So far, the Chinese model that Beijing’s policy makers have developed to organize, fund, build and after service its thousands of infrastructural projects has not lost any of its institutional dynamic. With these characteristics, it is going to be around for quite some time, the signature program of Pres. Xi Jingping. Still none of the many economic and organizational challenges it is currently facing are likely to be any less intense in the future.
