Abstract: This project was carried out to assess the bacteriological qualities of iced fish retailed at Eke-Awka market situated in Anambra state. Five different fish samples were collected from different retailers at the market. Samples were prepared from the internal organs the gills, the fins and the skin. After sub culturing into appropriate media twelve isolates were gotten. Out of the twelve, five different species of bacteria were identified and they are; Staphylococcus spp, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp, Bacillus spp, and Streptococcus spp. It was observed that the internal organs and the gills produced more bacteria growth than the fins and the skin with percentages ranging from 45, 25, 20, and 10 respectively. The bacteria isolate with the highest frequency of occurrence was Streptococcus spp, 33.5 , followed by E. coli, 28.7 , Pseudomonas spp, 21.5 , Bacillus spp 33.5 , while Stretococcus spp 7.5 had the least occurrence. Fish is a source of food to man. It is therefore recommended that fish be subjected to adequate cooking and proper handling before consumption.
