Abstract: Production performance of chicken breeds in private farms of Northern Bangladesh is better than the government farms. Most of the farms’ bio-security and precautions were not satisfactory both for private and government farms. Eggs of ISA brown were common in the market whose size was bigger than the others and the colour was preferred by most consumers. Indigenous chicken provided larger amount of meat because of its smaller and narrower viscera. Blood parameters for all birds showed that the broilers had higher nutrients compared to others. Karyotypic studies were important for identification and detection of the breeds’ genotypes, which revealed chromosome numbers, shape, size and centrometric index of the chickens and other birds. To sum-up, it may be concluded that the ISA Brown, Fayoumi and crossbred Sonali can be recommend as the best varieties of chicken suitable for rearing and marketing in the Northern regions of Bangladesh. For the improvement of these breeds, systematic breeding programme accompanied by effective feeding, management and disease control through preventive measures and bio-security at the farm levels should be emphasized.
