Marketing Channels Used By Registered Milk Producers: A Study in Nagaon District of Assam

Abstract: The universal significance of milk has never been underestimated and efforts have continuously been made to augment the production of pure milk for consumption in various forms. Milk contains nutrients, which help to maintain physical well-being. Milk is produced mostly in the rural areas of our country and sold to the end consumer or to the vendors or to some organisations. This paper is an attempt to find out the different marketing channels associated with dairy farming in Nagaon district of Assam. The study uses primary data from 120 registered milk farmers who are registered under the Directorate of Dairy Development and Office of the Assam Co-operative Society. The study also focuses on the various reasons behind selecting the channel s members by the respondents. The study has concluded that the farmers prefer to deliver the milk through primary dairy co-operative societies as they get remunerative prices and other facilities like ready market, information about various schemesbut from the point of view of the commercial viability selling the milk through milk vendors were more profitable for the respondents.
