Abstract: This essay, prepared for the Maine Law Review s Food Law Colloquium, challenges those who have voiced opposition to the pending application for new animal drug approval of a salmon genetically engineered for faster growth, explaining why their various procedural and substantive objections are entirely misplaced. Instead, the paper suggests that the continued delays in the FDA s review of this product represent another instance of licensing held hostage to politics. Ultimately, environmentalists and consumer advocates should embrace rather than condemn efforts at modifying animals in ways that promise more sustainable livestock production practices.
