Influence of Molding Ingredients on Properties in Phenolic Acid Cured No-Bake System

Abstract: Now a day’s no-bake sand system is widely used for the production of near net shape casting. This study focuses on phenolic acid cured no-bake system for sand molding. This is two-part no-bake system, phenol resin is treated as first part and aldehyde is the second part as hardener. The set of experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of resin, hardener percentage and curing time with three different levels of each on compression strength, tensile strength, permeability and mold hardness. The Experiments are designed as per the Taguchi techniques to form experimentation sequence according to L9 array and data analysis is done by MATLAB16 software. The hydraulic compression testing machine along with attachments for shear and tensile strength measurements is used for testing. The output responses are optimized by means of Gray Relational Analysis (GRA) method to get optimum combination of set of input parameters. The all selected parameters are considerably influenced on mold properties. The optimum percentage of phenolic resin, aldehyde as hardener and the level of curing time are obtained for set of better mold properties.
