Abstract: In the equipment fault diagnosis field, as in medical diagnosis, simple common sense is enough to recognize that observation or symptom relevance is an important issue. This paper presents the deduction of a mathematical formulae for observation relevance measurement in a fault diagnosis system and shows that the results are in complete agreement with the relevance concept introduced by Robertson and Spark-Jones for their well known and proved technique of document retrieval. This formulae has been used in a fuzzy CBR fault diagnosis expert system called SADEX. Some forms of the application illustrate the results.
