Effect of Skew Angles on a Multi-Cell Minor Bridge With Edge Beams

Abstract: As far as the structure of bridges is concerned, bridges with a unique character like the skew angle is a way forward. In past, a limited study has been carried out on the bridge with a skew angle. In this paper, an analytical study of Multi-cell minor bridge with edge beams using finite element software STAAD pro. v8i and also plate analysis is conducted. The study has been carried out to find the effect of skewness on the bridge components i.e. top slab, bottom slab, outer slabs and inner slabs. The skew angles that have been taken for the study ranges from 0⁰ to 70⁰ with an interval of 10⁰. The loads taken for the study are live loads (70R wheeled, class AA loading and SV loading), Dead loads, surfacing loads, earth pressure, temperature loads, live load surcharge and their combinations as per IRC.6:2019. Effect on design parameters was examined at critical positions under critical loads. In this analytical study, design parameters like longitudinal moments, transverse moments, shear forces and displacements are examined. It has been observed that all the parameters show a linear increase with the increase of skewness. A comparative study, of top slab design torsional moments, is also carried out between models with edge beams and models without edge beams. Comparative study, results reveal that edge beams give good results but only when skew angles are large.
