Modelling the β → ω Phase Transformations in Ti- Alloys Through a 4D Structural Description

Abstract: A 4D model is proposed to describe the β → ω transformation in a titanium alloy. Such a model employs an angular parameter θ. This dictates scalar order parameter η, lying between 0 and 1. Variation of η permits one to not only model β (Im3m), ω (P6 mmm), and α (P63 mmc) phases, but is also capable of capturing structural features of possible transient phases. It will be shown that they help in unraveling the possible path of transformation. Themodel thus provides an alternative and unified description of possible structural transformations in terms of η.
