Drilling of Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 Under Flood and Criogenic Colling Condition

Abstract: In this work drilling experiments is carried out on Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) 2205 material. DSS material being inherently hard is tough to machine. Generally it has ferrite and austenite phases of microstructure which is equally present in right proportions throughout the material. This material finds its application in marine and petrochemical application. In this experimental work, drilling is carried out using a solid carbide drill bit 8.5mm diameter without coating. Machining parameters and their respective values for performing the experiment are cutting velocity 40 m min, feed rate 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 mm rev and constant depth of cut 20 mm respectively. Drilling is carried out by flood and cryogenic (LN2) cooling condition separately. The experimental process factors considered are (output parameters) thrust force, and torque, temperature, micro structural analysis and surface roughness. After the experiment it is found that the thrust force and torque comparatively maximum in cryogenic cooling condition. It is also observed that the cutting temperature calculated during the experiment is comparatively minimum in cryogenic cooling condition.
