Development of an After-Treatment Device with Low Cost Catalysts for NOx Emission Reduction from Diesel Engines

Abstract: The combustion process of fuel in the internal combustion engine produces exhaust gases at the end of each cycle. The exhaust gases compose of harmful emissions like carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (UHC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and smoke. Among these emissions, NOx emission is higher in case of diesel engines. Conventional systems and methods are attempted to reduce this problem by using different catalytic converters (after-treatment devices) which uses catalysts (typically platinum, palladium, and rhodium) to react with the gases and reduce emissions from the exhaust gases. However, these catalysts are noble metals and too costly. Hence, the presented work was carried out to provide an alternate way of addressing the problems which are not yet fully answered by conventional methods in a cost effective manner. An after-treatment device was designed and fabricated for the emissions reduction using very low cost catalysts i.e., alumina, silica and activated charcoal. The exhaust gases from the outlet valve of the engine are at sufficient temperatures to react with the catalysts in the device. The device was integrated with a single cylinder direct injection diesel engine and conducted the experimental tests with wide range of conditions. Results explored that NOx emission decreased by 21 at 100 load with the use of the developed after-treatment device.
