Design of Coplanar Waveguide LPFs using Open Stub and Defected Ground Structure (DGS)

Abstract: This paper presents a compact coplanar waveguide lowpass filter (LPF) of low insertion loss and wide attenuation band. The proposed study is designed by employing open stubs and Defected Ground Structures (DGS).Since, in Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) the signal plane and the ground plane are considered same hence in this paper the defect in the rear plane of the CPW is named as DGS. Initially the response of the proposed LPF without any DGS has been simulated using Method of Moment (MoM) based IE3D EM simulation software. Then, E-shaped DGSs are introduced in the ground plane for widening the attenuation band. DGSs are placed directly under the transmission lines to improve the passband characteristics and to suppress the higher order harmonics. The cut-off frequency of the proposed filter is 2.7 GHz, and the maximum insertion loss in the passband is 0.3 dB. The attenuation band of the LPF is extended up to 8 GHz with a minimum suppression level of -10 dB. The roll off factor obtained for the presented filter is 29dB GHz. The proposed filter is designed using GML1000 substrate with dielectric constant of ϵr = 3.08, substrate height h = 0.508mm, and tanδ = 0.02.
