TOPSIS Based Taguchi Approach for Multi-Criteria Optimization in Quality and Productivity Characteristics

Abstract: The present study highlights the Technique of order preferences by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) based Taguchi application for multi-criteria optimization in quality and productivity characteristics in the machine-made tufted carpet. Tufting speed (N), Stitch Rate (SR), Gauge size (G) have been considered as process parameters for optimizing quality characteristics such as compression recovery ( ), compression (mm) and tuft withdrawal force (Kgf) based on Taguchi L9 OA experimental design. Lower characteristic is better criteria for compression and the higher characteristic is better or compression recovery ( ). Process parameters considered are Tufting speed (N), Stitch Rate (SR), Gauge size (G) and process response analyzed are compression recovery ( ), compression (mm) and tuft withdrawal force (Kgf). Important mechanical properties of carpet are pile strength and thickness loss in terms of tuft withdrawal force and compression behaviour, respectively. This study suggested a simultaneous optimization for performance characteristics using the TOPSIS based Taguchi method. The outcomes got thereof have been compared with the predicted results followed by the confirmatory test.
