Impact Energy Absorption Capacity of Fiber Reinforced Polymer Matrix (FRP) Composites

Abstract: Fiber reinforced polymer matrix (FRP) composites have emerged as a major class of structural materials and have significant potential use as substitution for metals in aerospace, marine, automotive, and other industries such as architectural structures. In this study, the impact energy absorption capacities of various FRP composites were investigated. The experimental studies were performed with production of specimens followed by subjecting them to the Charpy impact test. The laminated composite plates were fabricated with hand lay-up vacuum bagging method by using woven glass fabric plies, chopped glass fiber and woven carbon fiber plies respectively. Combinations of different fiber layers were also produced in order to see the improvement of hybrid effect on impact energy. The test specimens were also subjected to post curing treatment process to analyze the effect of post curing temperature under impact loading. The absorbed energy of each FRP composite was determined by the Charpy impact test according to ISO 179-1:2000 Standard dimensions and their impact strength values were calculated. Lastly, relative comparison of specimens’ energy absorption capabilities was introduced to find out better combination of laminated composite structure.
