Sphericity and Shape Analysis for Grain Scale Organization at Sungai Hulu Langat

Abstract: Stream and rivers form an essential link in the hydrological cycle. River flow has the ability to scour the beds, carry particles and deposit these particles, thus altering the river sinuosity. As the grain is not preserved probably, they will become non-porous or impermeable. Runoff water might straight away run off into the river, increase the water flowrate and flood may occur. The presence of grain particles in the river is very important as it would be able to control the velocity of water flow especially during wet season. This study was carried out to analyse the particle sphere and shape of grain bed materials at upper and lower part of Hulu Langat River. Sneed & Folk diagrams were used for analyzing. This method has been advocated as the most appropriate method for unbiased presentation of the shape of particles. About 400 samples of grain particles have been collected at upper and lower part of the river. The bed materials were analysed by quantifying the frequency distribution of particles at a, b and c of angle. The findings of the study concluded that at upper of the river, the flowrate was higher due to high elevation, and the bed material classified as very coarse gravel and the shape of the particles were mostly bladed. Compared to the lower part of the river, the flowrate is lower due to low elevation, the bed materials were classified as coarse gravel and the shape of the particles were platy and bladed.
