Abstract: This paper aims to discuss how energy networks between countries and continents accelerate global energy transition. It summarizes the two major benefits of transmission interconnections: renewable energy integration and curtailment mitigation. In addition, this paper highlights the current status and future prospects of energy networks in various parts of the world. Transnational and transcontinental energy networks are crucial to accelerate energy transition because these interconnections would lessen our current dependence on fossil fuel-based power plants. Upgrading the existing interconnections, building new transmission lines and implementing ongoing interconnection projects are important ways of intensifying global energy transition. Therefore, modernizing transmission grid which transmit renewable energy over long distances via interconnected transmission lines is one of the priorities for the next few years. In general, energy networks accelerate global energy transition through combination of lines and substations that allow energy from renewable sources to be exchanged between neighbouring countries and continents.
