Generation Expansion Planning for Telangana State Power System

Abstract: This paper presents Generation Expansion Planning (GEP) problem for a Telangana State (TS) power system. GEP is a highly constrained and non-linear optimization problem. In early days, the electric power generation is mostly from conventional types of plants emit Green House Gases (GHG) and other pollutants lead to environmental pollution. Due to higher depletion rate of fossil fuels and pollution impacts, it is important to consider Renewable Energy Sources (RES) such as wind, solar, biomass etc., for planning the future power system. In this study, Long-range Energy Alternative Planning (LEAP) software has been used for solving the GEP problem. In the proposed work, GEP problem is solved for fifteen years from 2016-2030. The various scenarios such as Green House Gases Mitigation Scenario (GHGMS), Low Demand Scenario (LDS), High Demand 1 Scenario (HD1S) and High Demand 2 Scenario (HD2S) are considered separately in addition to Reference Scenario (REFS). In all scenarios, the system performance factors like installed capacity required, emission of pollutants, reliability and total cost are analyzed using LEAP.
